How to Lay Mulch Film with Drip Irrigation

Drip and mulch work best together. The drip tape goes down first, then the mulch film covers it and the holes are punched for each plant. This guide walks through the steps, what to watch for when making holes, and how to avoid the one mistake that wastes water at the edges.

Weed Mat vs Mulch Film: Which One Does Your Farm Need?

Both control weeds but they are not interchangeable. Mulch film is for seasonal crop rows where you want to hold moisture as well. Weed mat is for pathways, nurseries and permanent plots where you want water to pass through. This guide tells you when each makes sense and which saves you more in the long run.

Common Questions

Questions Farmers Ask First

Which mulch film colour is best for tomato? +

Silver-black mulch film is generally recommended for tomato because the silver surface reflects light upward into the canopy, which reduces insect pressure and can improve fruit colour. Black mulch works well too, especially in cooler weather when warming the soil helps germination. Tell us your district and sowing month and we will confirm the right choice for you.

How thick should mulch film be for my vegetable crop? +

For most vegetable crops like tomato, chilli and watermelon, a thickness of 25 to 30 micron is standard. Thicker film at 35 micron and above lasts longer and suits crops with a longer growing season or fields where you want to reuse the film after harvest. We will confirm the right specification when you tell us your crop.

Can I use mulch film with drip irrigation? +

Yes, mulch film and drip irrigation work very well together. You lay the drip tape first, then cover with mulch film and punch holes for transplanting. This combination saves the most water and keeps weeds out at the same time. Our guides explain the exact steps and the common errors to avoid.

What is the difference between weed mat and mulch film? +

Mulch film is a thin plastic sheet used for single-season weed control and moisture retention around crop rows. Weed mat is a woven fabric used mainly in pathways, nurseries and orchards where you need a permanent or multi-season weed barrier that also lets water through. The right one depends on your setup and we can advise in a quick call.

How does a vermicompost bed reduce my fertiliser cost? +

A vermicompost bed uses earthworms to convert farm waste, cow dung and kitchen scraps into rich organic compost. This compost improves soil structure and feeds your crop slowly, reducing how much costly synthetic fertiliser you need each season. Our HDPE vermicompost beds are low cost and simple to set up at home.
